Founded in 1961, Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) is the medical and public health voice calling for the elimination of the gravest threats to humanity: nuclear arms, global warming, and toxic chemicals. PSR’s work to educate the public about the dangers of nuclear arms grew into an international movement, and in 1985 PSR shared the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) for their efforts. In 1992 PSR expanded its mission to apply its medical expertise to escalating environmental health issues and in recent years has focused on the serious threats posed by global climate change and toxic pollution. PSR uses expert reports and advocacy campaigns to promote safe drinking water, to eliminate of persistent organic pollutants, and to reduce mercury exposure.
PSR brings unique resources to the challenge of confronting toxic chemicals, including strong public confidence in the medical profession, specialized expertise in the health consequences of exposure to toxic chemicals, and the voices of 31 chapters, 21,000 activists and 32,000 members across the United States, in addition to a national staff with extensive policy experience. PSR is capable of generating effective media, grassroots, and policy impacts, using the credibility of doctors to articulate the consequences of exposures to toxic chemicals and to push for the policy reform that would prevent exposures.
