Spiffy
Matt and Hannah are busy with school, sports, and chores. Matt has taken up cross-county running, and Hannah’s been busy playing soccer. They still help with chores in the evening, but if they have a late meet or game and tons of homework, then they are excused from chores. We sure miss them on the days when they’re busy.
Recently, Guy hired a full-time morning person to help with morning chores, and four after-school helpers for evening chores. The extra hands will allow Guy’s dad to return to retirement, and Guy will be able to get into the house before 8:30 p.m., and even get a chance to catch some of Matt’s meets and Hannah’s games.
The corn silage is finally ready to eat. After it is harvested, it takes almost three weeks to ferment before Guy uses it for feed. We’re fed about 20 lbs. of corn silage per day. Guy used to buy corn meal, but by using the corn silage he grows here on our farm, he’s able to save money by reducing the amount of grain he purchases. And it’s a real treat for us cows!
On our last milk test, I peaked at 70 lbs. a day. Even Guy was surprised at what the meter read, because I’m one of the smaller cows in the herd. I still love getting my share of attention and look for it every day.
